The unprecedented postponement of South Africa’s 2025 budget announcement reportedly resulting from disagreements in the government of national unity over a proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) increase, highlights the urgent need for a fairer, more sustainable taxation policy. In response, the New Economy Hub is hosting a “Money Talks: TAX” webinar on 27 February at 11am.
This webinar will provide civil society leaders, media and policymakers with insights on effective tax communication, advocacy strategies, and research-backed recommendations for progressive tax reforms. The Money Talks: TAX study surveyed over 10,500 people across seven countries, including South Africa, revealing that 65% of South Africans feel overtaxed and support higher taxes on the ultra-rich as well as large corporations.
KEY DISCUSSIONS WILL INCLUDE:
- How to frame tax policies in ways that resonate with both the public and decision-makers.
- Strategies for mobilizing support for progressive tax reforms.
- Addressing economic inequality through fairer tax policies.
- Lessons from global research on tax communication and advocacy.
Date: Thursday, February 27, 2025 | Time: 11:00 SAST (UTC+2) |
Join us to unpack the future of taxation in South Africa and explore how we can advocate for a fairer, more sustainable system.
