Global research, Money Talks, reveals that 70% of South Africans support the government investing in climate action, believing that climate change funding is important and a good investment in the future. In comparison, only 22% of South African respondents believed that funding for climate action was a cost that could not be afforded due to other global issues.
The research also shows that 86% of South Africans support the government investing in ‘green industries’ such as renewable energy and sustainable farming to create new jobs. Just 4% of respondents disagreed with funding being used in this way.
Money Talks 2023 also demonstrated that there is strong support in the country for new climate-friendly policies – 83% of South African respondents supported ‘polluters pay’ policies to tax industries profiting from fossil fuels to fund poorer countries in reducing their carbon emissions.
Sekoetlane Phamodi, Director of the New Economy Hub said:
“This research shows that South Africans are not only concerned about climate change but are prepared to support an ambitious government program to take decisive climate action.”
“South Africans see the direct connections between climate disasters at home and abroad, and the negative impacts they cause for South African lives and livelihoods.”
“The message is clear: South Africans are ready to be engaged about the practical steps that must be taken to build a new economy powered by renewable energy and sustainable practices.”
Ahead of the general election this year, the research offers crucial insight into public attitudes and clearly signals demand from South Africans for longer-term investment in action on climate and development.
