Policy Brief 01 | How the Climate Change Act and Draft Sectoral Emissions Targets propose to build South Africa’s resilience against climate shocks

This brief has been prepared to assist policymakers, responsible decision-makers and stakeholders who seek to ensure the implementation of the Climate Change Act through participatory processes.

The purpose of the Act is to enable an effective and coordinated climate change response and a just transition to a low-carbon economy and society, in accordance with South Africa’s international commitments in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

Addressing society’s current and future vulnerability to climate change through the Act will depend on key mitigation and adaptation instruments such as sectoral emissions targets and climate change adaptation plans.

The socio-economic benefits of these instruments and their relationship with the NDC in the context of the Climate Change Act are featured in this policy brief.
